The Cypriot National Guard was established in 1964 following intercommunal violence between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, evolving from earlier defense efforts amidst political and social tensions. Initially formed as a predominantly Greek Cypriot force, it integrated various military branches, including the army, navy, and air force, under a unified command structure.
The National Guard played a significant role during the 1974 conflict, responding to both the Greek-led coup and subsequent Turkish invasion, which resulted in the division of Cyprus. Today, the National Guard remains a key component of Cyprus' defense, focusing on maintaining readiness and adapting to contemporary security challenges.
In 2003 this Woodland-inspired camouflage pattern was adopted for use by the Cypriot National Guard in a BDU-style uniform cut. There are two widely-known variants of the pattern. The only difference between them is that the newer print incorporates the Cypriot national crest into the pattern.
